Artful Crafting – Challenge 11 Flowers

Hello Everyone :)

Hope you all have been doing great. I am back with a new post after quite some time, the recent rains in Islamabad wreaked havoc with the internet connection in my area, and its good to be finally back on the blog and to be sharing a project with you today.

Artful Crafting’s Challenge 11 themed ‘Flowers’ is currently open for entries and the team is hoping to see some gorgeous projects from your side this time around as well :) Did you also check out the amazing inspiration from the design team? Do have a look in case you didn’t get a chance to.

Artful Crafting has introduced a Spring kit using the Simple Stories Carpe Diem collection, the first from their side. There is a main kit, a card kit and an embellishment kit as well. All three kits are of great value and such fun and bright and would go wonderfully with any of your spring themed/get together/vacation projects. Also there are many new products on the website, the Prima’s CHA 2016 collections are also in stock and running out fast and there is an amazing sale on Punches as well, do check it out! :D

I am sharing my inspiration project for the current challenge. For the kit I received 4 beautiful papers from Maja Designs, the Sizzix Camelia Flowers Bigz die, the Prima Daisies stencil and pins from Maya Road. You will find the links to the Artful Crafting website for all the products at the end of the post.

I tend to use ready-made flowers mulberry ones for all my projects and havnt tried making handmade flowers except for this one time ages ago when I could not find any that matched, that too I just made a single flower and called it a day. Since I got the Camelia bigz die in the kit I decided to use that and make handmade flowers for the project and what better way to focus on the theme. One of my goals has been to make a 100 cards and i am lagging behind on it so am trying to make as many cards as possible, just so I can send more out to family and friends and bring a smile on their faces.

I got a stamp set from a crafty friend as a gift and have been itching to use that, the sentiment that I decided to use was ‘You are loved’ written in a serif font which would go perfectly with the beautiful vintage style of the Maja Design papers. But with the love based sentiment I thought the soft green and blues werent working and so I took out the Maja Papers I had received in a previous kit that had shades of red and beige in them.

The Camelia die is a fun one, it has three sized flowers in it, a leaf and a fringe that is meant to be used rolled up as stamens for the flower. The biggest flower was 3 inches and was too big for the standard A6 card that I had decided on so I used the smaller and medium cuts. I cut out one medium flower from each of the three papers so I had petals in all three patterns, and two each from the smaller flower, three of each of the patterns for assembling a second smaller flower and three for the center of the medium one. I distressed the edges for the flowers first with ranger java bean dye ink and then with black soot so it appeared a darker brown as I didnt have a darker brown distress ink (seriously need the ground espresso in my life :P).

I used a round embossing tool and mat to give the flower petals a bit of an inward curl. The die cuts a hole in the center of the flowers which is great to align them and pass a brad through when you’re done. I staggered each of the die-cuts one by one and glued them together, three small ones followed by the three medium ones for the bigger flower and just the three small ones for the smaller flower. I had some gold brass colored brads and stamens on hand and decided to go with those for the flower center. Folded 4 stamens in half and passed through the hole and then added the brad after arranging them a bit.

I decided to dig out my sizzix dies and took out the ornate frame bigz die and the sizzix love, heart, border thinlits. I cut the ornate from from a double pasted sheet to give it a bit of a dimension and the floral heart from the thinlits from the maja design paper. For the frame I wanted to have it in the brass gold color but my embossing powder was too gold and i didnt have any gold cardstock that matched either… Can you guess what I did? I had a gold marker lying around and the color was perfect. Not only did I use the marker to color the frame but I also colored some enamel dots as well and used them on the card. Was very pleased with myself lol, hope you all can use the tip too :D

When I was figuring out the arrangement, I felt something was missing. The flowers needed to be ground with some leaves and the leaf shape in the die was a bit too big so I tucked in some brown ready-made mulberry leaves on the side. Oh btw did I mention Artful Crafting has some gorgeous mulberry flower packs in stock too!

I stamped the sentiment on the background first and positioned it keeping the arrangement in view, then stuck everything down. Added a few smaller size store bought enamel dots after coloring them in and mounted it on an A6 top folding card on its side. Its a simple card, wanted to keep the focus on the flowers and I hope you all like it.

I had also taken out my tattered florals bigz die yesterday as well and made a few roses too. Do check out my instagram account for the image for those :) Will be sharing some more projects in the coming day and promise to be a more regular in terms of posting.
