I am falling quite behind on my goal of making a 100 cards this year and am hoping to catch up this month so I decided to make a card to share with all of you today. Using patterned paper for cards is something I struggle with often and so making a card for the project was also a good reason to push myself.

The Crush collection is a really fun one, I love how there are pinks and reds and then a lovely shade of blue along with them. I thought to make a love themed card using the red and blue in the paper collection, a combination not so commonly used. The card making stack has 18 sheets in it, 3 each of 6 patterns and then are pre-scored for standard A2 cards. The 3×4 Journaling cards have 32 cards in them, 2 each of 16 designs. I wanted to limit myself to mainly using the collection for the card and making blue the highlight color. I went through the journaling cards to decide on a sentiment and decided on combine words from two of the cards to phrase a new one.

I picked the ‘to love’ part from the 3rd card in the first row (from left) and die-cut it using the 3rd largest die from the Spellbinders label four die set. And the ‘forever & always’ part from the 2nd card in the third row which i trimmed using my trimmer. I really liked the black and white word collage print (2nd card 2nd row) and so decided to cut two circles from it using the SSS stitched circles dies, one bigger than the other. I roughly laid out the sentiment with the circles and was good to go.

Once I had the sentiment decided, I decided on a distress ink background and using patterned elements to layer on to it so it doesnt become too busy. I trimmed a piece of white cardstock to 4.25″ x 6″ in size to layer on a top folding A6 size card base. For the red color I used festive berries but the blue color used in the papers is a shade that falls between tumbled glass and cracked pistachio and so I had to mix those two colors up. I distressed 2/3 rds of the cardstock from the center outwards using festive berries and then on the upper and lower part I first distressed it with tumbled glass and then layered on it lightly with cracked pistachio to get a very close shade to the original blue in the papers. I added a water splatter to the background, followed with a red festive berries splatter and a blue splatter by mixing the tumbled glass and pistachio inks together. I also added the red and blue splatters to the circles that I had die-cut from the word collage pattern as well.

When the background was dry, I started laying out my card. I needed some more elements to ground the sentiment and bring everything together. I die-cut two flourishes using the mft flourish die and light blue cardstock, and then some red hearts using the sizzix love, hearts and border thinlits die set. I also cut the solid heart from the xoxo patterned paper as well to layer on to the bigger circle and behind the scalloped heart die-cut.

Once I had the layout arranged, I took a picture with my phone and then started to adhere them all down in layers one at a time using foam and double sided tape, layering the sentiment so it was the highest layer. I added the finished panel onto a black card A6 card base to highlight the colors and finished off with some blue diy enamel dots I had lying on hand to complete the look.

I am a huge fan of background making. I have started applying this technique in my albums too. Yours turn out fabulous, Masha Allah. I just love the layout, too.
